8 or 11 day cycling holiday Macedonia, self guided with gps or group tour

Fiets door MacedoniëFollow the footsteps of Alexander the Great

Macedonia is an excellent country to have a fantastic cycling holiday. This beautiful country in the Balkan is famous for its stunning nature, rich history, friendly habitants and low traffic well maintained roads.

During this cycling holiday you will cycle through two national parks. The routes meander along many little rivers and as much as four lakes.

Ride through the history of Macedonia

Macedonia has a rich history which you can find all over the country, like the Turkish influences due to centuries ruled by the Ottoman Empire.

The capital city of Macedonia: Skopje

The capital of the country is Skopje. This city was destroyed by a heavy earthquake in 1963. The bazaar survived for the most part and still has the Oriental atmosphere.

One of most beautiful structures is the stone bridge with 55 arches over the river Vardar, which was built in the 15th century.

In this area you can find a lot of Islamic influences, especially in the Turkish quarter. This quarter derived due to Sultan Mehmed II who had built this bridge by Turkish laborers.

One for each day

Ohrid, situated at Lake Ohrid, is also known under the name “city of 365 monasteries”, one for each day.

There will be plenty of time to have a look at several of these monasteries.

Unesco Nature and Cultural Heritage list

UNESCO werelderfgoed - Oude cetrum van Ohrid
Ohrid’s old city centre is a must see, it is on the Unesco Nature and Cultural Heritage list.

Ohrid is big open air museum, filled with centuries-old churches, like the beautiful Sveti Jovan Kaneo, built on a hanging cliff above the lake and Sveti Clement at Plaosnik filled with extraordinary frescos and icons.

On top of the hill you can find the medieval fortress from the Bulgarian tsar Samuil, which was built around 1018. From the fortress you will have a magnificent view on Ohrid and the lake.

There will be an overnight stay in an absolute beautiful monastery; the monastery of St. Naum. It is situated on one of the best places at the lake.

The monastery is known through the monks St. Naum and St. Clement, apprentices of Cyrillus and Methodius, the founding fathers of the Cyrillic script.

Cycling through National Park

Fietst door Macedonische natuurparkenThe routes take you through national park Mavrovo, the biggest national park in the Balkan. You will see the mountain plateaus and ridges covered with meadows and many mountain flowers. During the hot summer time the shepherds move into the mountains’ with their sheeps to flee the heath of the hottest months.

You cycle also through the national park Galičica. The mountains of Galičica stretch from the shores of Lake Ohrid to those of Lake Prespa, which are underground interconnected. The national park also includes the island Golem Grad in Lake Prespa, which is known for its snake population.

There is so much to see and experience in this beautiful area of Macedonia!
